A native of Baton Rouge, Louisiana, Hubert Ho’s music has been performed in Carnegie Hall under the Pro Musicis Foundation series and at the Kennedy Center for the Arts, D.C. A former United States Presidential Scholar in the Arts, he is a recipient of the Charles Ives Scholarship from the American Academy of Arts and Letters. His music has been performed at such festivals as June in Buffalo, the Wellesley Composers Conference, the New Waves Festival (CZ), Cincinnati Conservatory’s Music XX, the Rencontres de nouvelle musique at Domaine Forget, the Aspen School of Music Advanced Master Class Program, the Ernest Bloch Festival, Arcosanti New Music Workshop, New Music North, and various Society of Composers conferences.
His music has been commissioned and performed by groups including the Oesterreiches ensemble fur Neue Musik, FAMA String Quartet, the New York New Music Ensemble, the Verge Ensemble at the Corcoran Gallery, the Berg Chamber Orchestra, California EAR Unit, Das Chicas Trio, and the Bakersfield Symphony New Directions chamber concert series. He was a staff composer at the Eugene O’Neill Puppetry Conference, writing incidental music for puppet theater.
He has completed artist residencies at the Djerassi Foundation in 2007, the Virginia Center for the Creative Arts, Yaddo, MacDowell Colony, I-Park, and the Headlands Center for the Arts, where he was featured on public television’s “Bay Area Backroads.” He is an enthusiastic new music pianist as well, having performed with the groups Earplay (S.F.) and the Berkeley Contemporary Chamber Players (Berkeley). He also actively performed in the Czech Republic, and at the Acanthes Festival in Metz, France and at the Darmstadt Ferienkurse fur Neue Musik.
His scholarly interests include the relationship between music theory and psychoacoustics, and has delivered papers at various academic music conferences on the music of Martinu and Varése, and conducted research in music theory pedagogy.
As a Fulbright Student Scholar he worked with Marek Kopelent at the Academy of Performing Arts in Prague, also delivering lectures on contemporary electroacoustic music from America and on the music of Elliott Carter. Dr. Ho received his Ph. D. from the University of California, Berkeley in Music and an A. B. from Harvard College in Music and Physics. His composition teachers have included Olly Wilson, John Thow, Edwin Dugger, Cindy Cox, Mario Davidovsky, Bernard Rands, and Dinos Constantinides. His piano teachers have included Patricia Zander, Jack Guerry, and Boyce Sher. He is currently a Lecturer in Music Theory and Composition at Northeastern University in Boston.
