Felicia Chen is a vocalist, improviser, community organizer, and educator with an affinity for contemporary sound art. Through her fearless approach toward the creation and interpretation of new works, Felicia eschews boundaries that limit the definition of music. A firm believer that classical music can be a catalyst for social commentary and change, Felicia frequently collaborates with artists and communities whose voices are underrepresented in the field.
Through Mazumal, a voice and cello partnership that programs new works championing diversity, Felicia has led composition seminars and workshops on educating young artists on civic engagement and inclusive dialogue in contemporary music. Mazmual has held residencies at CUNY Hunter College, Hartt School of Music, and Boston Conservatory at Berklee. In the Boston community, Felicia has performed with the Boston New Music Initiative, Black Sheep Contemporary Ensemble, and at the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston Sculptors Gallery, and faculty recitals at Harvard University, Berklee College of Music, and Boston Conservatory.
Felicia is a co-founder of KITA duo, which explores the playful relationship between voice and percussion, and the Boston New Music Calendar, a community resource that supports the local new music scene. Felicia is a recipient of the UC Berkeley Alfred Hertz Traveling Fellowship, the Boston Conservatory Alumni Entrepreneurial Grant, and has been a resident artist at the Banff Centre for Arts and Creativity, Composers Conference, Nief-Norf, Cortona Sessions for New Music, soundSCAPE, Fresh Inc Festival, and the Summer Institute for Contemporary Performance Practice. Felicia holds degrees from Boston Conservatory, where she was a part of the inaugural class of the Contemporary Music Performance graduate program, and the University of California at Berkeley.
