
Taiwanese-American conductor Tiffany Chang is recognized internationally for her exceptional artistry, formidable versatility, and unshakable integrity that lead people to accomplish things they once thought were impossible.
Chang is determined to increase job satisfaction for professional musicians by creating purpose-driven work cultures, promoting psychological safety, and building employee-centric workplaces. Recipient of a 2020 Solti Foundation U.S. Career Assistance Award and recently an OPERA America Grant for Women Stage Directors and Conductors, Chang makes her debut at Portland Opera and Opera Columbus this season. She was twice invited to conduct The Dallas Opera as part of the Hart Institute for Women Conductors. Previously named a winner of The American Prize in Opera Conducting, she recently received the 2021 Category of the Year Award for Instrumental Performance at the LIT Talent Awards for her revolutionary digital production of Beethoven's Choral Fantasy. She also served ten seasons as Music Director/Conductor for the North End Music and Performing Arts Center's (NEMPAC) Opera Project in Boston and served as guest conductor at Boston University and Baldwin Wallace Conservatory.
Chang's leadership resonates as "refreshing and thoughtful," and she navigates both triumphs and challenges with "integrity and class." She serves as artist-faculty at two major institutions across the United States, Oberlin Conservatory as Conductor and Berklee College of Music as Associate Professor. Her vision and striking innovations at both institutions had transformative impact that had local communities take immediate notice.
Her versatility continues to encompass frequent appearances with new music ensembles, such as the Dinosaur Annex Contemporary Ensemble, ALEA III, Xanthos Ensemble, and she has been invited to present a pioneering orchestral work she commissioned during the pandemic to be performed entirely on Zoom at prominent 2021 conferences with New Music Gathering and The Arc Project.
She has additionally been engaged by BlueWater Chamber Orchestra, OperaHub, the Pro Arte Chamber Orchestra of Boston, Brookline Symphony Orchestra, Parkway Concert Orchestra, Boston Youth Symphony Orchestra, Northern Ohio Youth Orchestras, among others.
Chang studied orchestral conducting with David Hoose and Bridget-Michaele Reischl; she has also worked with Carlo Montanaro, Emmanuel Villaume, Gustav Meier, JoAnn Falletta, Robert Spano, Gunther Schuller, Larry Rachleff, and Ann Howard Jones. She also studied cello with Amir Eldan, Hans Jensen, and Peter Reijto and composition with Amelia Kaplan and Jeffrey Kowalkowski. Her other notable awards include the Kahn Career Entry Award, Pi Kappa Lambda Prize for Musicianship, Theodore Presser Scholarship, and Ernest Hatch Wilkins Memorial Prize.
Chang holds a Doctor of Musical Arts degree in orchestral conducting from Boston University and several degrees from Oberlin Conservatory, including a Master of Music Education, Bachelors of Music in cello performance and music education, and minors in composition and music theory.
Sought-after as a panelist, speaker, and contributor, Chang shares her thoughts on leadership in her blog Conductor as CEO, drawing from ideas within business and industries outside of the arts. She also recently completed Seth Godin's altMBA program and joined a unique cohort of global leaders and change-makers.
